Different types of baby carriers
A baby carrier that is safe and ergonomically holds your baby is the best. It is easy to use, comfortable for both you and your baby, and provides all the functionality you need. Fortunately, there are more options than ever thanks to the technology and years of experience with babywearing. How can you decide which infant carrier to buy?
These are the four most common types of baby carriers:
- Wraps / Mei Tais
- Ring Slings
- Soft-structured Carriers
Our Aura Wrap is a popular stretchy wrap that’s extremely soft and easy to carry in a diaper bag for any adventures. It becomes second nature to tie the baby carrier wrap. Some people prefer to leave it on the day rather than retying it multiple times. The baby carrier wraps that are too stretchy will only allow you to carry your child in the front, so once they turn one year old you’ll need to transition to a more supportive carrier.
Hybrid Wraps
Our hybrid wrap, called Embrace, offers the comfort of a stretchy wrap and the support of a soft-structured carrier. Although it might not be our favorite, we love it. This hybrid wrap can be used front inwardly and front outwardly, depending on the development of your baby. It’s also compact enough to take with you wherever you go. The Embrace Newborn baby carrier is easy to put on and take off. It also makes newborn snuggles quick and simple.
Ring Slings
Ring slings can be a fun fashion statement. The lightweight, breathable baby sling carrier is a compact choice for travel. Baby slings can be used with either a hip or front carry. Most common complaints about babies are the bulkiness and lack of support around the shoulders. We recommend ring slings for short periods of time to protect both you and your baby.
Soft-structured Carriers
Soft structured carriers (SSCs), are the most well-known baby carriers in the west. Our SSCs have made Ergobaby one the most recommended carriers on the marketplace! These carriers can be used in a variety of positions, including back, hip, or front carry. These carriers provide support for parents and babies in the most convenient places, helping to protect their developing hips as well as their packs. These carriers are easy to use and simple to put together.
Because your carrier should reflect you, we offer many soft-structured carriers. There is something for everyone, whether you are an adventurer looking for something lighter and more breathable or concerned about sustainable products.
5 safe babywearing
Babywearing can be a wonderful way to keep your baby close while you work. It’s important to ensure your baby is properly carried. These are some safety tips for babywearing before you go.
Provide support for the neck and head. Until your baby is able to control their head and neck, you should not allow them to be pushed outward. The carrier you buy should have age guidelines that are clearly displayed on the front, hip-, and back.
Make sure baby’s face is clear. Infants with limited neck and body control may need support from an inward-facing position. However, this could limit air intake if they aren’t careful. Your baby’s face should be visible. Don’t cradle her chin. This can cause airway compression. Babies under 4 months old, preemies and babies with a cold or other breathing problem are at higher risk for suffocation.
Keep baby’s hips protected. Hip dysplasia or dislocation can occur if your little one isn’t properly positioned in his carrier. Your baby should be supported by his carrier, and his legs should spread naturally to the sides.
Inspect for wear and tear. Before each outing, double-check all buckles.
Always think safety first while out and about. Avoid hot liquids when babywearing. If you have to pick up something, bend at your knees and not at your hips, supporting baby with one arm.
